A singalong, a tour of heritage trees, and a beach walk are just some of the offerings at Cobourg’s third Jane’s Walk, the festival of free, volunteer-led walking conversations inspired by the writer, urbanist and activist Jane Jacobs (1916-2006).
Jane’s Walk was founded in Toronto in 2006 by a group of Jane Jacobs’ friends and colleagues as a way to honour her life and activate her ideas. It has grown from 27 walks in Toronto in 2007 to an international movement with thousands of walks around the world! The festival happens on the first weekend of May every year to coincide with Jane Jacobs’ birthday on May 4, 1916, and the walks encourage people to share stories, discover unseen aspects of their communities and use walking as a way to connect with neighbours.
This year Cobourg has four walks on May 4, starting at 9:30 a.m. and each about an hour long. The walks are free and will happen rain or shine, so just show up!
9:30 a.m. – Music in Motion, led by SONG Artistic Director Lucas Marchand. Meet at Rotary Park.
11 a.m. – Heritage Tree Tour of east Cobourg, led by landscape architect Gina Brouwer and Eddie Cork, Town of Cobourg Arborist. Meet at Merwin Greer School, 457 King St. E., Cobourg.
